Non-profit caring for Waikoloa Beach Resort’s community cats
The Challenge
The beautiful Waikoloa Beach Resort area provides a tropical oasis for visitors and residents alike. However, in this tropical paradise are colonies of feral cats: unwanted litters, unwanted pets, “nuisance” neighborhood cats, victims of abandonment, dumped to fend for themselves. With our mild climate and no predators other than humans, the population quickly explodes. Sadly, abandonment is never ending. A lack of pet friendly rentals, the high cost of veterinary services and no way to catch and prosecute cat dumpers are just a few of our island’s issues. But it’s not just a Hawaii problem, all across the country animal welfare organizations, rescues and shelters are overwhelmed. The only solution is to find homes when possible and to spay, neuter, return and manage the others.
The Path Forward A Community Effort
WHO WE ARE
Abaykitties was created over a decade ago, by a group of like minded friends who saw a need for a TNRM, trap, neuter, return and manage program, in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area. The only research-based proven method of population control. 100% volunteer and donation dependent, our volunteers provide fresh food and water to these poor forgotten kitties 365 days a year, rain or shine, as well as trapping them for spay/neuter surgery.
WHAT WE DO
Working with spay/neuter organizations Catsnip Hawaii, Advocats and Aloha Animal Oasis, we are trying to do our part to curb the population growth and be a part of the solution. Each cat receives spay/neuter surgery, an eartip, identifying them as having been to surgery, microchip, FVRCP vaccine and Revolution flea and parasite treatment. Cats will also be looked over and given additional treatments for illness and injury when necessary.

~Become a colony feeder, even one day a week makes a huge difference
~Become a trapper, once you learn, this work is rewarding and so needed
~Volunteer at a spay/neuter clinic
~Be a transporter, taking cats to and from spay/neuter clinic
~Volunteer at a shelter, rescue or sanctuary
~Become a foster. Fosters are a huge piece of the rescue puzzle

Get involved in your neighborhood. Is there a colony growing on your street, in your neighborhood park or shopping center? Can you and your neighbors work together to trap them for spay/neuter? A senior class project, a civic group agenda, a church group volunteer option? There are solutions if we work together. It’s going to take a village to solve the problem, and we need all of the villagers to be a part of the solution.
